Wayne Rooney showers son Kai with affection at England's World Cup training camp

By Jason Chester

He's due a good tournament, and with the World Cup finals less than a month away Wayne Rooney has been making final preparations at the England training camp in Portugal.

But while the mercurial striker squeezes in some last minute shooting practice before catching the FA flight to Brazil, he also found time to dote on oldest son Kai.

Wayne, 28, was joined by his family at the Vale Do Lobo Resort as England train ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on June 12.

Taking a breather on Wednesday, the Manchester United ace cradled his 4-year-old boy – who sported an England away strip beneath his blue jacket.

Dressed in his training kit, the doting father indulged Kai with affection after the youngster ran into his arms.

Wayne later idled on the grass with England skipper and fellow Liverpudlian Steven Gerrard – whose game attempt to grow a beard was evident as they passed the time.

The pair were also seen being put through their paces with teammates Adam Lallana, Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling and James Milner.

The striker has endured a disappointing season at club level with manager David Moyes sacked nine-months into a six-year contract with the Premiership giants.

Looking ahead to his third World Cup, Rooney has been working hard to ensure his fitness levels are high by taking two fitness experts on his post-season holiday – also in Portugal – with wife Coleen, Kai and youngest son Klay.

England are spending time in the Algarve and Miami in preparation for the expected hot and humid conditions, although their training camp in Portugal has not exactly gone to plan so far weather-wise.

The squad arrived in Vale do Lobo on Monday and, after torrential rain on Tuesday, were greeted by blustery conditions for their first and only open training session on Wednesday.

Earlier this month Wayne and Coleen were present at the Manchester United Player of the Year Awards, where he received the Goal of the Season gong for his wonder strike against West Ham United at Upton Park.

After being presented with the award, Wayne, also 28, said: 'It was a goal that I am really pleased with, I do think David Beckham's was a bit better, but I was happy to score.

'I did worry that it might bounce over the goalkeeper at first, but you just have to hope for the best. Thankfully it came off.'
