Britain's Got Talent Returns With Biggest Ratings Of The Year

Simon Cowell will be celebrating today as it's revealed that the return of Britain's Got Talent last night drew in the biggest TV audience of the year.

Saturday night saw the return of the show with Simon heading up the judging panel alongside David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.

Series eight of the show got off to an almighty start as reported overnight figures show it pulled in an average of 11.07million viewers, which is the biggest overnight rating of 2014 so far.

The 2014 launch was up 0.57m from 2013's opening show average of 10.5m and that's despite the show being delayed by 45 minutes due to the football overunning. When the show eventually kicked off just after 8pm, it enjoyed a 47.3% share of the viewers, peaking at 12.34m.

That means the show is the most watched of the year so far. Fellow ITV offering Coronation Street pulled in 10.07m, when viewers watched Hayley Cropper, played by actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, end her life. The Call the Midwife finale got 9.61m and the latest series of Sherlock received an average of 9.18m for it's three week run.

BGT fans saw acts like Paddy the dancing granny entertain the judges last night, with the 79-year-old and her dance partner going straight through to the live semi-finals after Amanda used her golden buzzer privilege.
