One Direction accused of copying special effect in You & I video from Clubfeet

By Fay Strang

Boyband One Direction have been accused of stealing the concept for their music video from Australian band Clubfeet.

Oh Yeah Wow, who made the video for the band's track Everything You Wanted  last year, took to social media not long after the video was released to point out what they believe are similarities.

Towards the end of One Direction's video, which is directed by Ben Winston and made by production company Fulwell 73, the famous five 'freeze' on screen before they merge into their frozen image and continue moving – a special effect Oh Yeah Wow say they created.

On Wednesday the Melbourne film production company took to Facebook to express their grievance.

Posting a link to a website, they wrote: 'Dear friends. As you may already know, those money machines One Direction & the sneaky chimps at Fulwell 73 Productions have decided to rip off our music video for Clubfeet.

'We here at Oh Yeah Wow have become somewhat fed up with plagiarism and as such, have decided to write about it. If you feel a rage face coming on, please share this link with the world.'

On the website the company explains their stance – making it clear they are not against creative evolution – they are merely concerned the hard work they put into creating the effect will not be recognised.

The video Everything You Wanted won a Triple J award last year for Australian Music Video of the Year.

As of yet the company have not heard from the band but it seems the Directioners have once again be more than vocal.

Seamus Spilsbury from the company told the Couriermial: 'We haven't heard any word from the band ... we have had a few emails from fans though, some voicing their anger and others that are supporting us. The One Direction fans sure are a passionate bunch!'

He also claimed that Oh Yeah Wow who directed Gotye's Easy Way Out video, were the first to use the effect.

'The technique is created using a number of well established VFX tricks. Our clip was the first to use these tricks in this conceptual context,'  he said.

The One Direction video marked a new mature style for the band as they walk along Clevedon Pier in Somerset, England.

It's the four time the band have worked with the director/producer – Ben - after they teamed up for documentary film, A Year In The Making and This Is Us as well as the music videos for Best Song Ever and Story Of My life.

The slow building balled was co-written by Julian Bunetta, Jamie Scott and John Ryan, who have previously worked with the band.

You & I will be released on May 25 as the fourth single from their album, Midnight Memories.

MailOnline have tried to reach out to Ben Winston and Fulwell 73 for comment.
