Hey Haters! Neil Patrick Harris Liked the How I Met Your Mother Finale - E! Online

How I Met Your Mother, HIMYMCBS

You may not have liked the How I Met Your Mother ending, but Neil Patrick Harris sure did. The former HIMYM star—now on Broadway in Hedwig and the Angry Inch—told Late Show host David Letterman he was all for the controversial ending.

In case you forgot, How I Met Your Mother ended with Ted (Josh Radnor) finally finishing the story of how he met the now-deceased mother of his kids (Cristin Milioti). After he wraps up the long-winded tale, his kids encourage him to go after Robin (Cobie Smulders) who has since divorced Barney (Harris). This ending left a bad taste in the mouths of many fans who took to social media to voice their disapproval.

"It wasn't necessarily the happy ending people were expecting," Harris told Letterman. "But Carter and Craig, who were once writers on your show and the executive producers and the creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it. Sometimes people's growth doesn't really mean that they grow up. There are certain people who you want to get in a solid relationship and really settle down and learn from things. You want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney's the guy who wants to bang your mom. At the end of the day, it's not always meant to be that way."

For what it's worth, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays have said an alternate ending will appear as part of the How I Met Your Mother complete series boxed set. Despite the criticism, Thomas took to Twitter to thank fans after the big finale.

"Thank you all. I mean it: Every possible reaction to the last 44 minutes...thank you all..." Thomas tweeted. "The fact that we have been a TV sitcom that has received this much passion from fans, for 9 years (not just tonight)—thank you. We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till [sic] the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us. "We did a finale about life's twists and turns and that is not always what happens...but THANKS! Seriously - no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU...you were with us. We love you. Thanks for this ride."
