Captain America: The Winter Soldier Wins Top Spot At US Box Office Over Rio 2

Rio 2 may have beaten Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier to take the Friday top spot at the US box office but hasn't won the weekend battle.

The family friendly animated sequel earned $12 million from 3,938 theaters, enough to beat the second Captain America movie.

Based on those numbers Rio 2, which stars the vocal talents of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, is expected to make a healthy $45 million domestic debut over the whole weekend, which would beat the first film's opening of $39 million three years ago.

Captain America soared to the top of the box office last weekend when it debuted with $95 million but on Friday came in second with $11.9 million.

Horror film Oculus managed an impressive $4.9 million beating Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner's sports offering Draft Day for third place.

Rounding out the top five is Divergent, which added $2.4 million to it's total in its fourth week of release.

UPDATE: The weekend takings are just in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which set an April ticket sales record when it opened a week ago, pulling in a hefty $41.4 million from Friday to Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Rio 2 meanwhile finished just behind with $39 million in ticket sales, according to estimates from Rentrak.
