'Scandal' serves up explosive season finale! - USA TODAY

SPOILER ALERT! Don't read on if you haven't watched the 'Scandal' season finale.

WARNING: Many spoilers!

Yes, there was a bomb. We knew that going into Thursday's season finale of Scandal.

But did it explode? Did it go off? Or as Olivia Pope (Kerry Washignton) might say through clenched teeth: "Did ... It... Go...Off??!!"

"Mr. President, We have a situation!" said Jake Rosen (Scott Foley), bursting into President Fitzgerald Grant's meeting. And moments later, they all watched as a bomb went off at a church. Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), of course, wasn't there, but his opponent, Sally Langston (Kate Burton), was.

Did saving Fitz's life cost him the election? Looks like it. Public sentiment is going her way.

Meanwhile, Rowan Pope (Joe Morton), Liv's dad, is in the hospital recovering from his knife wounds. "I was worried about you," Liv tells him, adding with gloom, "Fitz is going to lose the election."

Papa Pope tells Liv, "I love you ... I wish I could help. You." She rests on him in his hospital bed in a tender moment.

Meanwhile, Huck (Guillermo Diaz) and Quinn (Katie Lowes) are going at it again. In the office!

At his place, Jake is having a beer and watching the Redskins game, even though attorney David Rosen (Joshua Malina) wants him to get the bad guys.

And Fitz vows to Liv, "I'm going to marry you. We're going to have babies. Two babies, I think." She giggles.

Liv then tells Fitz that his father raped his wife, Mellie. Fitz is stunned and goes to talk to Mellie. "I fought him. I. fought." she says, leaning into Fitz for a hug.

Liv tells Fitz over the phone, "You can't leave her now."

Fitz responds with, "I love you." Liv replies, "I love you, too" Like schoolkids, they don't want to hang up the phone, even though she's at the hospital with her dad and he's about to give what will likely be his final speech.

Liv heads back into the hospital room, and there's her mom, the evil Maya (Khandi Alexander).

Meanwhile, at the speech, Fitz's son, Jerry (Dylan Minnette), is passing out, blood coming from his nose. He winds up dying from bacterial meningitis, contracted from a vial that is kept locked in Fort Detrick. Murder! "She killed my son," says Fitz of Evil Maya.

"We're going to win the election now," says Liv. "A child's dead -- and that's the first thing that popped into my head."

Liv tells her dad she wants to take him up on his offer of a plane. Escape it all.

She tells her Gladiators she's quitting. "We went over a cliff for you and you're walking out on us!?" screams Abby (Darby Stanchfield). Jake shows up at Liv's place, where she is surrounded by boxes. "Everything's that happened. None of it would have happened if it weren't for me. ... I'm the eye of the storm," she says.

"So this is your pity party?" he says.

"This is not a pity party. This is me doing what I do best. I'm handling this. I'm fixing this. ...Now it's time for me to stand in my truth... I'm the thing that needs to be fixed. I'm the scandal."

Jake's reply: "Take me with you."

Men and guns surround Maya Pope.

"Maya Pope is dead," Papa Rowan Pope tells Fitz.

"We got her," Harrison tells the Gladiators, reporting Maya's death to them. But Liv isn't there to hear it. She's heading for the tarmac, the jet, the escape. Out. Away. From all of this.

Harrison realizes that Liv is on a plane out of town, Maya is dead and B613 is back online. "This all worked out great for you," he says to Papa Pope, who replies: "My daughter wanted him to be president. And he is. Daddy took care of it ... He took my child so I took his."

Fitz wins the election. Maya's not dead. She's in a prison cell, overseen by Rowan Pope. Liv and Jake head off in a jet. Liv's phone rings and it's the White House. She doesn't answer it.
