Lena Dunham waits for car in her BARE FEET after peplum minidress divides opinion at the Met Gala

By Jason Chester

Her peplum mini-dress turned heads as she arrived at the Met Gala on Monday, but it was her bare feet, exposed to the elements as she trudged across the dirty pavement, that turned noses as she left later that night.

Indeed, Lena Dunham, 27, opted to remove her smart Giambattista Valli heels as she waited for her car with pal Caroline Herrera, thus revealing her feet while idling on the sidewalk outside New York's Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

The acclaimed actress, whose hit HBO show Girls turned her into a household name, had previously divided opinion by wearing an unflattering minidress, also from French fashion designer Giambattista Valli, at the annual event.

With a distinctive floral embellishment, the off-the-shoulder number revealed Lena's large tattoo, evident on her upper right arm.

The New York born star rounded off a rather divisive ensemble with numerous Fred Leighton rings – a fact she was evidently keen to document with a shot added to her Instagram account.

A fun accompanying caption read: 'Xxxcellent time 2 rob me.'

The uber-talented It Girl walked the red carpet without her two-time Grammy-winning beau Jack Antonoff.

Lena will next appear in Joe Swanberg's mumblecore dramedy Happy Christmas - due out July 25 - alongside Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick.

She's also currently filming the fourth season of her hit HBO series, which premieres next year.

The annual Met Gala is widely considered fashion's most glamorous event.

Each year, American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour hosts the bash, held at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art.

Wintour – who co-hosted this year's party with Sarah Jessica Parker and Bradley Cooper – charged $25,000 at ticket, $10,000 more than last year's price.

The theme was White Tie And Decorations, an ode to Anglo-American designer Charles James.
