'Allegiant' Will Get A Two-Part Finale On The Big Screen - MTV.com

The final movie in the "Divergent" franchise will be told in two parts.

The newly opened YA adaptation starring Shailene Woodley as heroine Tris has already made $117 million at the U.S. box office. That was enough for the studio to announce that the sequel, "Insurgent," would be released next year. Now, comes word from Lionsgate that "Allegiant," the final book in Veronica Roth's "Divergent" series, will be split into two movies.

The movies will come out roughly a year apart, with "Allegiant, Part 1" to hit theaters on March 18, 2016, and "Allegiant, Part 2" to come out March 24, 2017, though the films will not be shot simultaneously, as has been done in many other franchises like "Hunger Games."

The news about "Allegiant" isn't too surprising, considering that the norm now seems to be splitting the finale of a book series into two parts. The "Twilight," "Hunger Games" and "Harry Potter" franchises all doubled their pleasure with their finales, and "The Hobbit" made three movies out of its lone book.

There's no word yet on where the split will happen in "Allegiant," though chances are the movie version will expand on much of the action in the last half of the novel to fill out the two films. Let us know where you think the split should happen.

Either way, if you're a "Divergent" fan, and you probably are, you get double the fun with "Allegiant," and now don't have to say goodbye to the franchise till 2017. And, oh yeah, the second film in the franchise, "Insurgent," comes out March 20, 2015.

We just hope you're Dauntless enough to wait three whole years for the franchise's epic conclusion.
